A Lowell Park re-design to honor African American women born in the Boston area who had a lasting impact on Boston and the global society. Located at the crossroads of Brattle St. and Fresh Pond Parkway, this historically underutilized space sits at one of the busiest intersections in the city. The surrounding area, although primarily residential, also has two elementary schools, a high school, a hospital, and a walkable cemetery. Although this park is in a central location, it rarely receives any attention from the local government and remains largely unused.
The “re-design” focuses on creating a utilitarian space that incentivizes outdoor community gatherings as well as affording commuters a more convenient route between their homes and work. The “directional” path creates a safer environment for pedestrians and affords less intrusive future park maintenance. Additionally, the park offers a new safe space for children to gather and play on their way to and from school each morning.
The design was made using Sketchup Layout and Sketchup.
